Solar Decathlon 2009

Santa Clara University and California College of the Arts have teamed up to participate in the 2009 Solar Decathlon, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in partnership with its National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Reflecting both institutions’ penchant for innovation and commitment to contributing to a more sustainable world, our team is passionate in its pursuit of promoting solar technology and its integration into a beautifully functional and livable home that we will proudly display on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in the fall of 2009.

We are dedicated to promoting the idea of Living Light: harnessing sunlight to power our energy needs, lightening our carbon footprint upon the earth, and enlightening today’s consumers and the next generation of concerned, responsible citizens about the possibilities of sustainable living.

This drawing shows the exterior of the 2009 solar house, which is a modular home with large windows, a garden, and a water catchment
The garden will feature native species and edible plants.
The solar pv panels on the roof will generate enough electricity to sustain all the typical amenities in a modern home.
The water catchment will collect rainwater for the garden and other household uses.
