Considered by many to be the underdog among a field of engineering powerhouses in the 2007 competition, SCU achieved first-place points in 5 of the 10 categories. Richard King, contest founder and director, likened Santa Clara’s effort to David challenging Goliath, and when the results were in, Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman announced “the Cinderella team from California” as the 3rd place winner!
But we weren’t surprised by our success. The 2007 team built a stunning example of energy efficiency that, in one visitor’s words, “felt like a home, not an experiment.” The 2009 team strives to surpass this legacy and continue incorporating cutting-edge technology into a home for life.
